Argia is a photography collective based in Hendaye, in the Basque Country, bringing together photographers and image lovers from all walks of life. Rooted locally yet open to the world, the collective develops artistic, cultural and social photographic projects connected with places, people and cultures.
The Argia Collective is an association dedicated to the creation, promotion and dissemination of contemporary photography. Rooted in the Basque and Pyrenean region, the collective develops artistic projects that explore the links between place, humanity and visual creation.
The collective grew out of an initiative led by Arnaud Elissalde, a photographer from the Basque Country. His path, shaped by travel and by encounters with diverse cultures, ways of life and traditions, has fostered a sensitive, human and documentary approach to photography that now lies at the heart of Argia's identity.
Around this approach, Argia has grown into a space for creation and collaboration, bringing together photography enthusiasts, amateurs and professionals alike, driven by the same desire: to tell the story of the world and bring different perspectives together. The name Argia, which means «light» in Basque, reflects this wish to shed light on new perspectives and to encourage dialogue between artists and audiences.
Although the collective is deeply rooted in the Basque Country, its members live and work in different regions. This geographical diversity feeds the projects, multiplies viewpoints and enriches the photographic styles developed within the collective.
The Argia Collective was founded on a strong desire to pass on stories and build connections between people. The collective encourages exchanges between photographers and image lovers, supports collective creation and develops projects with a cultural, educational and social dimension.
In this spirit, Argia notably organises the Three Crowns Photography Festival, an event that highlights the human, cultural and natural richness of the region through exhibitions, artist residencies and participatory projects.
