From 2010, Nahia Garat spent a year and a half working as an assistant to several photographers in Bordeaux and the Basque Country. After graduating from ETPA in Toulouse in 2014, she developed her personal work alongside reportage and portrait commissions.
Her work focuses on bodies in space and explores the interplay between body, gaze and movement. Driven by an introspective approach, she explores subjects such as encounters, our relationship with place, childhood and the night. Her style first developed in black and white, in a classic approach, before shifting to more instinctive and gestural colour series, where photography becomes a game of encounter through the action it creates.
A multidisciplinary artist based in the Basque Country and a member of the Barnez Kanpo group, she regularly runs workshops for children and adults, with an approach that is both educational and free-roaming, attentive to everyone's expectations. She works under the name Kameleoia.
« Islada » means « reflection » in Basque. The series traces five consecutive summers spent following the life of a travelling summer camp.
It is an immersion in childhood memories. Through discovering independence and meeting others, one and many, and the group, a tension remains palpable. A sensitive plunge into the moment when we learn to live together and to become ourselves.
Her series « Islada » is shown in the exhibition Crossed Perspectives #2: Telling the World, at the Mendi Zolan cultural venue (Hendaye), from 16 September to 10 October 2026. Free entry.
