Between photography and music, “Sound and Vision” explores the deep links between sound and image.
For three days in Hendaye, the exhibition brings together film photographs, talks, a screening and music performances around one question: how do images shape our musical memory?
Photographer Simon Arcache presents his series « Going Up, Going Down », a sensitive immersion in the world of the blues in the American South, while author and music historian Diego Gil takes us through the history of iconic album covers.
A weekend designed as a visual and sonic experience, between documentary, musical heritage and contemporary creation.
Simon Arcache's exhibition was produced as part of the 2024 Voltaire Photography Prize, by the Confrontations Photos festival, in partnership with the Centre des Monuments Nationaux and the Gex local branch of Crédit Agricole Centre-Est.

Winner of the 2023-2024 Voltaire Photography Prize, the series « Going Up, Going Down » grew out of photographer Simon Arcache's travels in the American South. Through intimate portraits, scenes of life and musical landscapes, the exhibition immerses visitors in the world of the American blues.
Shot on black and white film, the images reveal faces, gestures and fragments of memory, in a sensitive approach between documentary and authored photography.
The exhibition has been shown at the Château de Voltaire in Ferney (01) and the Château de Bussy-Rabutin (21), in partnership with the Centre des Monuments Nationaux.
From the Beatles' sleeves to the legendary images of David Bowie or Led Zeppelin, photography plays a key role in the history of popular music.
A selection of record sleeves will also illustrate the talk, extending this dialogue between sound and photography.
In the talk “Sound and Vision”, Diego Gil offers a visual and musical journey through the images that have shaped our collective imagination.
A way of rediscovering music through the eye.
The first film officially authorised by David Bowie's estate, Moonage Daydream is much more than a music documentary. Made by Brett Morgen after seven years of work, it takes viewers on a kaleidoscopic journey through the artist's creative and philosophical world.
Made up of unseen archive footage, concerts and interviews, the film is built solely around Bowie's own voice. Premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, it was acclaimed by critics.
A screening that naturally echoes the Sound and Vision talk by Diego Gil, a specialist in David Bowie's work, who will speak after the film to continue the dialogue between image, music and identity.
